Leavenworth, Kansas

The Richard Allen Cultural Center opened its doors on July 19,1992--across the street from the historic Bethel A.M.E. Church which was part of the Underground Railroad.

The center offers a glimpse into history of African-Americans and their profound effect on American society locally and nationwide. It was created to ensure that the rich heritage of African-Americans and their effect on American society would not be lost. The center is dedicated to researching, collecting, preserving and disseminating the history of African-Americans.

Their mission and purpose is to educate the public about the rich history of African-Americans and their contributions to every phase of American life.

Carroll Mansion

A visit to this museum is an experience into the past. You will enter a Victorian home finished in 1882. It features elaborate handcrafted woodwork throughout the house, beautiful stained glass windows and elegant antiques from the Victorian age era to the early 20th century.

Leavenworth is best known for the "Federal Pen" or "Big House", which is now a medium-security prison. Construction of this historic prison began in 1897, with the first cell house opening in 1906. The Federal Penitentiary has been the home of Kansas City Boss Tom Pendergast, George "Machine Gun"
